101 Things I Will Teach My Daughter

I read a link on Facebook the other day about 101 things that this woman would one day teach her daughter, and I've previously read other ones, but not all her points made sense or applied to me. Some of them, in fact, I had know idea what she was talking about. So I thought that I would make my own list for my future daughter, and then rewrite it in a few years time when I actually have a daughter if some of my lessons from 24-year-old me is still what I would want to teach my daughter when I have her.

Some of these things will obviously be what my mom, gran and various other female figures have taught me and some of them will be from things I've figured out on my own. But if they make it onto this list, then it's probably safe to say that they're worth remembering for years to come.

1) You can say anything you like to anyone, as long as you say it with respect.

2) The person that is nice to you, but not nice to the waiter, is not a nice person.

3) Yes, make-up enhances features, but you do not need to cake it on. In fact, you are beautiful without it.

4) ALWAYS wear sunblock.

5) A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear.

6) If you think another woman is pretty or looks nice, tell her. Women need to encourage and uplift each other more, and it will cost you nothing.

7) Always tell the truth, but be nice about it where you can.

8) Never apologise for who you are.

9) You don't have to like everything in the world, but try it at least once before you say no.

10) Cheating is never acceptable.

11) Don't smile if you don't mean it.

12) Never let a man whistle at you on the street. You are not a dog.

13) Find friends who are happy to hold your hair back, rub your back and dry your tears. Do the same for them.

14) Never accept that being a stay-at-home mom is not a career, or that it makes you lazy.

15) If you are going to be a stay-at-home mom, however, make sure that you're able to take care of you and your kids if, God forbid, anything were to happen to your husband.

16) Make sure that if you have an opinion, it's well thought out and researched. Don't argue just to be able to say something.

17) You don't have to be good at science or maths to be smart. Creativity takes brains as well.

18) Learn how to cook. You don't have to be good at it, but you do need food to survive and it's helpful if it tastes good.

19) Your success is not mine or your father's success. It's yours and only yours.

20) Be who you are and say what you feel. Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter.

21) Read, read, read. Find a topic that interests you and read as much about it as you possibly can.

22) Always take pictures. On your camera, or on your phone. Make sure you have pictures to look back on.

23) Speaking of pictures, you don't always have to be posing for a picture. The most natural pictures are the unplanned ones.

24) High school does end. And who you are in high school is not who you will be for the rest of your life. Go with the flow and remember that this awkward stage of your life will pass.

25) Learn to trust your intuition. It will never fail you.

26) Find someone who loves you exactly as you are.

27) Find someone you can be silly with and who can make you laugh until you think you're going to pee your pants.

28) A soulmate doesn't have to be a guy. Your best friend can also be your soulmate.

29) Your heart is going to get broken. And that's okay. But it will heal.

30) Don't let anyone push you around or talk down to you.

31) Always say "I love you" before you leave or end a conversation with someone you love.

32) If you're wrong, apologise, even if it's hard.

36) Believe in magic.

37) Enjoy birthdays and Christmas, no matter how old you get!

38) Take out a retirement annuity.

39) It's never a bad idea to invest in property.

40) Laugh at people's jokes, even if they're sort of lame.

41) Your dad and I will never not like a boyfriend of yours without a valid reason. 9 times out of 10, your friends will dislike him too.

42) Own your style. Find something that works for you and buy it in as many colours as possible.

43) Sexy lingerie is NOT just for guys. If you're wearing sexy lingerie, chances are you'll feel sexy and confident. People will notice the confidence!

44) God will always show up. Showing up is the essence of who He is and He will never let you down.

45) Learn to change a tyre and check your own oil.

46) Your worth is not defined by your height, weight, age or appearance.

47) Learn to set boundaries. For yourself and for other people. People will treat you how you allow them to treat you.

48) Go swimming with and without clothes on.

49) Go see the world.

50) Make mistakes. Make many mistakes. As long as you learn from them.

51) Don't put your career ahead of your family. At the end of the day, when you retire, your family will be the ones waiting for you. Make sure they want to be there waiting for you.

52) We won't mind if you're not good at something, as long as you do your best.

53) Walk with you head up high.

54) Take care of your feet. It shows that you take pride in your appearance, even with the part that isn't seen that often.

55) Like what you like unapologetically.

56) Do not take sex lightly. Women are more emotional than men, that will not change.

57) Don't put all men into one box.

58) Let your dad protect you. It might seem over the top and annoying, but you have no idea the battle he is fighting trying to stop himself from wrapping you in cotton wool.

59) Let me worry. I grew you from scratch but I cannot stop you from going out into the world so this is how I deal with it.

60) You cannot have amazing memories in your old age, if you are not adventurous in your youth. Make memories and keep the stories.

61) Don't kiss and tell.

62) What is right for someone else, might not be right for you. And vice versa. Always remember that.

63) Pick your battles; big enough to matter but small enough to win. If it's worth fighting for, however, fight fiercely.

64) Try not to assume the worst.

65) Drugs are never a good idea. Alcohol in moderation.

66) There are certain types of guys that you need to avoid at all costs. You will know them when you see them.

68) Learn to walk away. From bad relationships, service, conversations and environments.

69) Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.

70) Ironing is horrible. But it needs to be done. Try to keep it up to date.

71) Not everything needs to be a competition. Just do you.

72) There is nothing that can't be cured with tea and a good cry.

73) If something is really bothering you, ask yourself if it will matter in 5, 10 or 15 years.

74) There is nothing worse than a woman who can't walk properly in heels. If you like them, learn to walk properly, or not at all.

75) Try to remember that there are certain things you can't change. The size of your calves, the width of your hips and the nature of your parents being three of them.

76) Sleep brings clarity.

77) If you have curly hair and prefer to straighten it buy a decent straightener. The cheap ones will damage your hair.

78) Don't smoke. It will leave you looking old and haggard earlier than necessary. And it's a bad habit.

79) Learn to do a budget, take out a home loan and how to shop for groceries. They don't teach you that in school but they should.

80) People may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Never forget that.

81) Never, EVER, drive drunk. Call us. Your dad and I will pick you up without judgement. I pinky promise.

82) Always take a pinky promise seriously.

83) Go barefoot. Feel the sand beneath your feet and the grass between your toes.

84) It is a very small world. Someone always knows someone that you know.

85) If you're wearing pantyhose and they ladder, clear nail polish stops the ladder from running.

86) Listen when people talk to you. It's easy to tell when someone isn't actually paying attention and it's just plain rude.

87) Your dad is a better cook than I am. Ask him for lessons.

92) Learn people's love languages. And learn to communicate in the way someone thinks.

93) Take initiative.

94) The toilet seat up or down argument is not worth it. He has to lift it up just as much as you have to put it down.

95) Entertaining but not necessarily accepting every piece of advice you are given is a skill worth mastering. Including this list.

95) Always keep your phone charged. You might need it in an emergency.

96) You do not owe your father and I anything. We chose to have you. We did not have you so that you could look after us in our old age or so that you would one day owe us something. We love you and you owe us nothing.

97) Throwing a tantrum will not get you anywhere.

98) A bikini wax is highly recommended.

99) You are entitled to change your mind more than once.

100) We live in a world where the intenet is huge. Don't forget that once it's online, it's difficult to get off. Don't send sexts. Ever.

101) There is no one who will love you more than your father and I. We will be there for you always.

This list will probably be added to and changed a million times in the near future, but this is the jist of it for now :)
